First Cruella Trailer Gives Off Disney’s Joker Vibes

Disney has unveiled the first trailer for Cruella, which focuses on the character Cruella de Vil (starring Emma Stone in the leading role) from the 1961 animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

The movie is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by Emma Thompson.

But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella. Disney’s Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie (I Tonya) from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis.

The trailer is clearly inspired by the style and tone of Warner Bros’ 2019 movie Joker by Todd Phillips. This just might sort of be Disney’s own version of a Joker movie in terms of vibes.

Cruella is slated to premiere on 28 May 2021. In the meantime, check out the trailer below:
