Octopath Traveler is venturing off into mobile game territory with Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent which will release in summer this year.

The hit JRPG that combines the classic look of older games with revamped modern graphics will be getting a mobile spinoff in the form of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. The game will be a prequel to the Square Enix RPG set a few years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, where Orsterra is ruled by tyrants hungry for “wealth, power, and fame.”

The game will let you control a variety of characters known as “the Chosen Ones” of a divine ring and will feature 2D pixel art, enhanced with 3D-CG effects known from the previous game but this time on your handheld devices. The game aims to bring fans back to the wonderous world of Orsterra with beautifully stylized environments filled with side quests, dangerous bosses, and treasures.

An evolved command style battle system utilizes up to eight party members, with swipe controls that allow for fast paced command selection, with over 64 characters to find and recruit at launch. The vast roster of party members will allow players to explore an endless combination of characters to build your ultimate team. The game promises many different pathways you could take with the player being able to experience them all, with the help of improved social features. Character interactions such as “Inquire” for information, “Entreat” for items, or “Hire” for recruiting party members will determine how these events fold out and what these new relationships yield.

If you liked the music from the first game, Yasunori Nishiki, the composer behind Octopath Traveler, is back for this latest installment with new compositions exclusive to this game. A proper sequel is still in the works, however the last update we got for that was in February 2021.

The mobile game prequel will be available for iOS via App Store and Android via Google Play in the summer later this year, plus Android users can sign up for the closed beta test right now.
