It’s a good last year for Sony PlayStation, as the company has shipped a ton of PlayStation 5s.

Sony has shipped 17.3 million units of PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide while also shipping 116.8 million PS4 units as of 31 December 2021. For the three months leading up to that date of December, Sony has shipped 3.9 million PS5 units and 200,000 PS4 units.

Here are a couple more stats from PlayStation concerning their financial results in 2021.

• There are 48 million PlayStation Plus subscribers as of December 31, 2021, which is up 0.6 million from the 47.4 million subscribers during the same period the previous fiscal year.
• PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 software combined sold 92.7 million units in the third quarter of the fiscal year 2021, which is down 11.5 million from the 104.2 million software sold during the same period the previous fiscal year. 11.3 million units were first-party titles, which is down 7.7 million from the 19 million sold during the same period the previous fiscal year. 62 percent of software sales were full game software digital downloads, compared to 53 percent the previous year.

Despite all this, the PS5 has faced significant supply issues, thus unable to keep up with PS4’s past numbers despite demand.

On a related note, Sony has reportedly extended production of the PlayStation 4 console beyond its intended lifecycle, probably due to both the ultra-high demand of the PS5 that cannot be met, worldwide chip shortage, and the pandemic effin’ things up in general economy-wise.
