Ron Gilbert Is Making A New Monkey Island Game For 2022

Are adventure games making a comeback in 2022? Seems like it, based on this retro-laced piece of news.

Ron Gilbert, the original writer and director of the 2D point-and-click Monkey Island adventure series  (the first two anyway) will be making a new follow-up called Return to Monkey Island. It’ll be published by LucasFilm Games and Devolver Digital, and will be led by Gilbert and his studio Terrible Toybox.

Other ex-Monkey Island developers and creators returning to Return To Monkey Island include Dave Grossman (writer, programmer), Dominic Armato (the voice of Guybrush Threepwood), and composers Michael Land, Peter McConnell, and Clint Bajakian. Return To Monkey Island will be out sometime in 2022. The game’s art style and designer will be Rex Crowle, who was behind LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway.

The Monkey Island series started with the 1990 title The Secret of Monkey Island for PC (DOS). The game and its sequels follow the comedic pirate-laced misadventures of pirate wannabe Guybrush Threepwood, featuring voodoo, ghost pirates led by adversary LeChuck, insult sword fighting, and a plethora of curses and hijinxes. The last Monkey Island game was Telltale Games’ Tales of Monkey Island back in 2009. So it’s pretty awesome to hear that the series is making a comeback in 2022.
