Ms. Marvel’s Animated Visuals Were Inspired By Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse

Courtesy of Disney+ Hotstar, we were given the opportunity to join a press conference for the upcoming Ms. Marvel series. It was attended by Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel), Rish Shah (Kamran), Yasmeen Fletcher (Nakia), Matt Lintz (Bruno), Mohan Kapur (Yusuf Khan), Zenobia Shroff (Muneeba Khan), Saagar Shaikh (Aamir Khan), Sana Amanat (Producer and Writer), Meera Menon (director), Bisha K. Ali (showrunner), Adil El Arbi (director), Bilall Fallah (director) and Kevin Feige.

They answered a bunch of questions, including how Iman received her casting call via Whatsapp all the way back in 2020, and the fact that they filmed Ms. Marvel‘s AvengerCon sequence right next to Spider-Man No Way Home‘s set.

One of the most interesting parts of the press conference was director Adil El Arbi explaining how they came up with the distinctive and unique visual animations that pop up in certain scenes in Ms. Marvel.

They answered:

“For us, we always wanted to find a way to translate her imagination and her fantasy world in a cool way. And that’s how we came up with the idea of injecting that animation aspect to it. But we were a bit afraid that Kevin (Feige) and the rest of Marvel would say no because it’s different from all the other shows in the MCU.

So we made a whole presentation and a whole dossier with YouTube videos and all that, explaining why it was important to have those sequences. Surprisingly, he said yes. He said, “Don’t go overboard and don’t do it every five seconds but if it’s true to the story and the character, let’s go for it.”

That’s how we had that style, we were also inspired by (Spider-Man) Into The Spider-Verse. So, thank you, Kevin, for allowing us to do that.”

You’ll have to see for yourself what exactly he means when Ms. Marvel premieres on Disney+ Hotstar on 8 June 2022. In the meantime, check out our interview with Ms. Marvel showrunner and head writer Bisha K. Ali by heading over here.
