The Rick And Morty Season 6 Premiere Is Totally Bonkers
By Alleef Ashaari|August 29, 2022|4 Comments
Rick And Morty is arguably the most popular it’s ever been since it first launched all the way back in 2013; that’s almost a decade ago. The franchise is at its pop cultural zenith with appearances in movies (Space Jam A New Legacy) and games (MultiVersus). Rick And Morty Season 5 was an uneven affair but featured a stronger focus on continuity, which was welcome for fans who have wanted to learn more about the mysterious lore behind Rick Sanchez.
We were given early access to the first two episodes of Rick And Morty Season 6 (there will be 10 episodes in the whole season). Of course, I can’t spoil most of what I watched but I can tell you this; the first episode picks up directly from the end of Season 5 and is a continuity-heavy episode. In fact, it has callbacks to earlier seasons, which I’m sure long-time fans of the franchise will appreciate. At this point, viewings of past seasons are pretty much required to understand what’s going on in the latest seasons, and that’s fine. It feels satisfying when a show rewards you for being a fan and this is one of them.
Meanwhile, the second episode offers a totally bonkers science fiction scenario, which Rick And Morty usually excels at. However, this episode is a little messy and doesn’t really seem to be going anywhere with its premise. After everything we’ve seen in Rick And Morty, this episode is middling at best. Plus, it relies a little too much on a pop culture reference joke (it’s the Die Hard joke from the trailers, which I can reveal), which is a running gag that gets repeated too much in this episode and is really only funny the first few times. Still, it’s a crazy enough episode that I just wish is funnier than it turned out to be.
While the start of Rick And Morty Season 6 isn’t perfect, the season premiere does tease something major to come, so at least we have that to look forward to in the rest of the season. As I previously mentioned, we’ve only seen two episodes out of the 10 planned episodes in Season 6, so it’s too early to say anything concrete about the quality of the whole season. There’s still a lot more room for Rick And Morty Season 6 to impress us all so we say; bring on another season of absurd multiversal and timely-wimey shenanigans.
We received an early screener of Rick And Morty Season 6 courtesy of HBO Asia. Rick And Morty Season 6 is slated to premiere on 5 September 2022 on HBO GO.
