Cyberpunk 2077 Is Facing A Huge Player Resurgence; Here’s Why

Anime adaptations of video games are nothing more than glorified advertisements to get people to jump back to the source. Of course, many viewers and players are savvy enough to distinguish bad ones from the rare good ones. For every POS like the Dota anime and Dragon’s Dogma, there’s the recent Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime from Studio Trigger. We loved that show for its concept, its attitude, its storyline and characters, and animation, so it’s really no surprise it’s getting people back to Cyberpunk 2077.

What we didn’t expect is the player count to be bigger than usual. CD Projekt announced that the game has drawn in more than 1 million players (new and returning) every day this week since 23 September.

“Each day of this week Night City has been visited by 1 million players, both new and returning. We wanted to use this opportunity to thank you for being with us and playing the game. Thanks, Chooms!”

You don’t have to take the publisher’s word on these numbers: Steamcharts stated that Cyberpunk 2077’s average concurrent player count has more than doubled in the last 30 days from 10,000+ in August to 23,000+ this month.  The peak concurrent player count is up even higher, from 18,695 in August to 89,387 over the past 30 days.

You can clearly thank Studio Trigger’s anime adaptation of the Cyberpunk IP for bringing in these new and returning players, buying the game off the digital PC shelves and playing through the title to get revenge on the final boss. You can also thank the game’s new 1.6 Edgerunners update that fixes bugs and performance issues: two things that hampered the launch of the RPG back in 2020.

This isn’t the first time a CD Projekt game has benefitted from a Netflix show: see The Witcher TV series and the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sales for proof of that. Still, it’s nice to know people are coming back to a promising and story-rich game that really botched its arrival years ago.
