Super Mario Bros Movie Hits High Score Box Office Numbers Of US$377 Million In Just A Few Days

Mama mia!

Nintendo and Illumination’s first film adaptation of the Super Mario Bros. franchise since 1993 has raked in US$203 million for the past 5 days in US markets (US$146+ for the first three days, another US$57 million as of right now). The film came out on 6th April. The movie’s overall overseas box office sales are at US$173 million (excluding Malaysia and Japan, sadly) which makes the movie’s box office worldwide total currently at US$377 million and rising (via Deadline and Box Office Mojo).

Here’s a PR quip from Universal in regard to the current windfall of the new 3D movie featuring plumbers and turtles.

“The incredible partnership of Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto’s iconic characters, with Illumination and Chris Meledandri’s unbeatable filmmaking and storytelling prowess, has led to this combustible moment at the worldwide box office. Audiences of all ages and backgrounds have flocked to theatres to revel in this extraordinary big-screen celebration.”

As of right now, the film’s weekend sales beat that of John Wick: Chapter 4 (US$14.6 million), Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (US$14.5 million), and Air (US$14.5 million). It remains to be seen if the Mario movie has staying power like the aforementioned heavy hitters.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is out now in parts of Asia and the rest of the world. Malaysia will be getting their Nintendo fix on 20th April. If you want a non-spoiler review of what we thought, head here.
