Baldur’s Gate 3 Enters Top All-Time Peak Steam Games, Larian Boss Very Surprised

Baldur’s Gate 3, arguably the biggest PC RPG that just released a few days ago, is now in Steam’s top ten list.

Which list? Well, it’s the top 10 all-time concurrent player count list as the game peaked at over 800,000 players a few days ago. To be more specific, Baldur’s Gate 3 is at 814,666 in all-time peak numbers at this time of writing.

Larian Studio boss Swen Vincke said to PC Gamer that the massive concurrent player numbers surprised him, as well as made him worried throughout the launch period. After all, it’s on him and his team if gamers found a progress-blocking bug in the mid and end-game.

“This was not in the books at all. This was way, way beyond what we expected. There’s also no precedent for it, for our type of game to have that many people playing concurrently … Everybody here is very happy. You see a lot of smiling faces. At the same time, a lot of focus. We have reports coming in from people having issues, so we’re focused on fixing those issues, that’s very much on everyone’s minds.”

He also was worried that Baldur’s Gate 3 would get a muted release despite positive reception for its Early Access version, which led to the company selling 2.5 million PC copies of the game.

“We’ve seen that in the past, other games were very successful in early access and then on the day of release they didn’t sell much more because they saturated already. That was my biggest fear, that that had happened.

It was a thing I worried about, because it is Dungeons & Dragons and a more complex ruleset, so getting people on-boarded is not the easiest thing in the universe. That was one thing where I said if there’s a risk, that’s it, people saying ‘I’m not doing this Dungeons & Dragons stuff.'”

That is a fair point to make. While many CRPG fans and D&D aficionados will straight up buy BG3 day one, what would other RPG fans think of the title? At the very least, the game’s PS5 port is seeing a big jump in pre-orders on PlayStation; that version’s coming out in early September.
