Masahiro Sakurai’s Latest Game Design Video Highlights Two Southeast Asian Games
The legendary Kirby, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Super Smash Bros. game designer Masahiro Sakurai has used two fine Southeast Asian indie games in his latest game design talk, this time on graphics and their impact on gaming fun.
In his talk, he brings up two Southeast Asian gaming examples when going through titles with impactful visual appeal: Toge Productions’ Coffee Talk and Metronomik’s No Straight Roads. He adds these titles as examples of its fun factor and graphics giving impact to one another when it comes to drawing its intended gaming crowd.
“The game world is a mirage you can pass straight through. Whether or not it has more meaning than that, depends in part on the actual content of your game. Of course, environment and character art are generally made alongside the rest of the game, so it’s not often there’s a mismatch there – but I’d say it’s good to be aware that the fun of a game and the appeal of its graphics can impact each other.”
