The journey for the Americas League team in AfreecaTV VALORANT League (AVL 2023) began impressively with a 2-1 win against Paper Rex in their first match. They then went on to secure a 2-0 triumph against the formidable Korean squad DRX and a hard-fought 2-1 victory against VCT EMEA League 2023 champions Team Liquid.
Sentinels‘ off-season improvements were evident throughout AVL 2023, especially on the map Split, where they displayed dominance with a perfect 3-0 record.
All Sentinels players delivered impressive performances. The team’s rapid success can be attributed to Zachary “zekken” Patrone’s prowess as their new duelist main, Tyson “TenZ” Ngo’s emergence as a top controller player, and substitute player Jordan “Zellsis” Montemurro providing the team with positive energy.
Sentinels’s success on Split continued in the grand final, where their double controller comp with TenZ on Omen and Zellsis on Viper created challenges for PRX. The strategic use of dual-layered smokes disrupted PRX’s aggressive attack, allowing Sentinels to execute swift rotations and challenge post-plant positions, resulting in a dominant 9-3 half.
Maintaining control of Split after halftime, zekken’s impactful entries on Raze overwhelmed Paper Rex, leading to a convincing 13-7 victory and a 1-0 lead for Sentinels.
On the second map, Sunset, Sentinels sought revenge for their earlier loss to Paper Rex. After a tied first half at 6-6, Sentinels gained the upper hand with effective post-plant executes, securing a 13-10 victory and extending their lead to 2-0.
Facing a potential sweep, Paper Rex introduced Yoru for Jason “f0rsakeN” Susanto on Breeze. While the final map started evenly, Sentinels dominated the second half, securing a commanding 13-6 victory and claiming their first tournament win since 2021.
