Sea of Stars Hits Over 4 Million Players In Less Than Four Months Launch

Sea of Stars, the immensely popular indie turn-based RPG developed by Canadian indie studio Sabotage Studio, has surpassed a remarkable milestone of 4 million players since its launch.

The developer revealed the news on 18 December, signifying that Sea of Stars achieved the impressive milestone of 4 million players within less than four months since its initial release on 29 August. This accomplishment encompasses not only the full-game sales across various platforms, including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch but also those who had the opportunity to experience it for free through the PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass subscription services, where it was available on day one. Although the exact sales figures are unknown, the game logged 250,000 sales during its first week and 100,000 copies were sold just on launch day.

The official announcement was made on Twitter and in a press release, where the studio shared that, “Sea of Stars has been played by over 4 million people across all platforms and subscription catalogs in less than 4 months”.

The overwhelming popularity of Sea of Stars comes as no surprise. The game has subsequently garnered several prestigious awards, including Best Indie at The Game Awards and Best Indie Game at the Golden Joysticks. Additionally, it has been recognized as one of the best games of 2023 by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

Thierry Boulanger, co-founder of Sabotage Studio, shared his views regarding the overwhelming reception the game has garnered and the steady surge of players:

“Sea of Stars is the game of my dreams, and seeing its quest resonate so strongly with players and critics means the world to everyone at Sabotage. The team behind this game is the most talented and dedicated group I could have ever hoped to create Sea of Stars with, and I’m again reminded of their brilliance as we progress with creating Sea of Stars’ upcoming DLC, Throes of the Watchmaker. For fans to have recognized our adventure in such an incredibly prosperous year for RPGs alongside new arrivals from the genre’s biggest franchises … we simply just cannot thank you enough for supporting us, and we can’t wait to show you what’s next for Sea of Stars.”

Sabotage Studio has recently unveiled the upcoming DLC, Throes of the Watchmaker, which may pave the way for connecting Sea of Stars to its predecessor, The Messenger, which is set in the same universe.

In our review, we said, “For anyone complaining about the lack of a true JRPG with bells and whistles: buy Sea of Stars. Sabotage Studios did an amazing job in blending both the old and new while still dishing out a memorable indie gaming experience, made with love for the genre while also fixing its glaring flaws.” Read our Sea of Stars review here.

Sea of Stars is now available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
