Anime Shangri-La Frontier Returns with Season 2 in October

The Japanese animation studio C2C recently announced that the highly anticipated second season of the Shangri-La Frontier is currently in the works. The exciting news is that the second season will be split into two cours, with the first cour scheduled to be released in October 2024.

Fans of the series can rejoice as this continuation will pick up where the first season left off. It will continue exploring and unravelling the storyline and introduce two new characters, Kyoju and Aramis. These additions to the cast will be voiced by Joji Nakata and Hiromu Mineta, respectively. Their roles were previously revealed in the finale of the first season.

The announcement was made through the release of a new trailer, which provided an intriguing preview of the main character Sunraku’s intriguing opportunity to uncover the enigmatic secrets of the game Shangri-La Frontier.

The story is set in a futuristic setting where games utilizing outdated display screens are categorized as retro games, while full-dive VR games have become prevalent. As these games have gained widespread acceptance, there has been a proliferation of so-called “trash games.” Rakuro Hizutome is an avid enthusiast of these often-disparaged titles. He immerses himself in these games under the pseudonym Sunraku, utilizing their glitches to his advantage, and overcoming any difficulties he encounters.

Rakuro has achieved a remarkable feat by clearing the notorious Faeria Chronicle Online, a trash game known for its oversized scale. However, he experienced a state of burnout. At the recommendation of the owner of his favourite gaming store, he purchases the popular Shangri-La Frontier, a full-dive VR game boasting a staggering 30 million registered users. Now, Rakuro embarks on a new adventure as the player character Sunraku, utilizing his skills as an expert trash game player to navigate the game’s virtual world.

As of now, fans can expect the 2nd season on the platform Crunchyroll, however, Netflix has yet to make any announcement if the new season will return to the platform.
