Nintendo Direct June 2024: The Best Announcements

Game company Nintendo is at it again, playing by its own rules and releasing a Nintendo Direct livestream chock-filled with game announcements a week after the Summer Games Fest/PC Gaming Show 2024 onslaught. And the latest showing has quite a lot to offer.

Here are our top picks during the Nintendo Direct June 2024 livestream, along with the rest of the showcase.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Gameplay Trailer

The long-awaited gameplay reveal of a game announced in 2017, the next entry in the Metroid Prime series is rumoured to still be cooking and is a co-production alongside Bandai Namco. In any case, the gameplay reveal today was quite a sight, and now with a 2025 release window.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Another possible hit game, the upcoming next entry in the Mario & Luigi RPG series features a new 3D engine and a whole new story, along with new Mario & Luigi team-up powers and turn-based attacks. Out later this November.

The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom Lets You Play As The Title Character

We’ll pretend Zelda Adventures for CDi doesn’t exist. Anyway, this new Zelda game has you 3D printing objects and enemies to help you on your quest to find Link. And it’s using the Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening 2D-3D HD engine to boot!

Dragon Quest HD-2D Remakes Galore!

Along with a long-awaited gameplay reveal and release date of the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake (out 14 November), Square Enix also announced that Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remakes are in the works and are slated for a 2025 release.

Romancing SaGa 2 Remake

Another nice Square Enix surprise, the SNES Romancing SaGa 2 entry is getting a remake, with new 3D graphics and adventuring perspective, and an updated turn-based battle system still retaining the Glimmer system where you learn new skills in the heat of battle. Out 24 October.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD

Another bonafide classic from the Wii, this tough 2D platformer features stages from the 3DS version, as well as smoothed-up graphics. Out early next year.

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics

Any chance this Marvel VS. games collection be heralding a sign of things to come, like oh say a Marvel VS Capcom 4? It’s too soon to say, but this collection comes with all the best arcade classics from X-Men: Children of the Atom to MvC2, now with online play and a load of new gallery and music jukebox options.

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection

Another long-awaited re-release; this Capcom adventure game puts you in the shoes of prosecutor Miles Edgeworth in his own two-part adventure back on the Nintendo DS days. Now with remastered HD graphics (which you can switch back and forth if you prefer the 2D pixel DS original) and a load of new features, as well as the inclusion of the second game which was never localized until now, this one’s for you Ace Attorney fans out there.

Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero

My personal favourite announcement of the bunch: after 24 years we now get a Phantom Brave sequel set for 2025. Features ghosts, pirates, and gridless turn-based combat.
