Sony Expanding PlayStation VR2 Capabilities with App on Steam

Sony’s PlayStation VR2 is expanding its capabilities by introducing a PC compatibility app on Steam, which will enable headset owners to play VR games from the popular Valve-owned distribution platform.

The company had previously announced their efforts to broaden the VR game library for the PlayStation VR2 by testing PC game support. Recently, a PS VR2 application surfaced on Steam, scheduled for release on 6 August 2024.

The Steam page states that the PS VR2 app “needs to be installed on your PC” to play VR games through the platform using the headset. The app cannot be simply deleted after pairing the headset to your PC or Steam account. Once the installation is complete, users will be able to update the firmware for the headset and its Sense controllers and adjust settings.

To utilize the app, users will need three components:

1. PlayStation VR2 VR headset
2. PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers (connect via Bluetooth)
3. PlayStation VR2 PC adapter

The PS VR2 PC adapter is set to be available on 6 August as well. This adapter is necessary to connect the PlayStation VR2 to a PC, providing access to a wider library of VR games beyond what is available on the PlayStation 5. Although the app itself is free, users must keep it installed on their PC to access Steam VR games.

Sony has cautioned that certain features of the PS VR2, such as HDR output, headset feedback, and eye tracking, will not be available when using the headset on the PC. However, the company has guaranteed that the PS VR2 will still support 4K resolution, a 110-degree field of view, finger touch detection, and a see-through view on PC.
