Mythic Quest Season 4 Review: Still All Fun & Games In This Video Game Sitcom
By Alleef Ashaari|January 24, 2025|0 Comment
Mythic Quest Season 4 is as much of a follow-up to the previous season as it does feel sort of like a soft reboot. It’s apt, considering it’s been almost two years since the end of the last season. So how does the return of the most underrated video game sitcom fare? Read on to find out more.
Both Ian and Poppy are back to making a new expansion for the game, Mythic Quest, but they face new competition by Dana’s successful new division that focuses on user-generated content. The status quo feels similar and familiar but also a bit different here and there. There are new challenges, conflicts and drama. Every season of Mythic Quest has always covered timely subject matter and relevant themes. Season 4 features the ethics of using AI (such as AI moderation and Poppy making AI versions of real people), corporations and execs prioritizing profits in the games industry while creatives and employees get the short stick when it comes to both financial and certain rights, games industry layoffs and more.
Mythic Quest distinguishes itself from other workplace sitcoms or dramas and has always been best with its past standalone episodes such as Season 1’s A Dark Quiet Death, Season 2’s Backstory! and Season 3’s Sarian. These were poignant, emotional and complex episodes that were highlights of past seasons. Does Mythic Quest Season 4 have those? Well, one of the highlights of the new season is a meta episode poking fun at the new whodunit resurgence (thanks to movies like Knives Out and Murder On The Orient Express).
But yes, Mythic Quest Season 4 does continue that seasonal tradition of having a standalone episode and this time it focuses on the realities of growing up and the challenges of a young streamer trying to stay relevant (with Elisha Henig reprising his role as Pootie Shoe from past seasons, who also surprisingly wrote the episode as well). Unfortunately, this episode is nowhere near as good as the last standalone episodes. It’s also great to see that many of the episodes in Mythic Quest Season 4 were directed by members of the cast, including Danny Pudi, Charlotte Nicdao, Ashly Burch and Imani Hakim.
The biggest flaw of Mythic Quest Season 4 is perhaps that there are fewer elements and plot points directly related to video game development and the games industry. Most of that is relegated to the background. Sure, this isn’t really that big of an issue considering every workplace sitcom can’t be expected to limit itself to its initial premise. For instance, The Office can’t simply be about selling paper, it’ll get old and boring fast.
The truth about Mythic Quest Season 4? Funnily enough and ironically, it’s the best thing from Ubisoft in years.
We received screeners from Apple TV+. Mythic Quest Season 4 is slated to premiere on Apple TV+ on 29 January 2025.
