The Highest-Grossing Video Game Movies Of All Time: Top Of The Leaderboard
By Alleef Ashaari|January 27, 2025|0 Comment
Video game movies are generally not received well to the point that everyone always says that there’s a video game movie curse. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. Over the past few decades, some video game movies and video game adaptations have been successful enough to garner considerable global box office achievements and have proven to be financially lucrative for studios.
Which video game movies have made the most money to date? Some of them will surprise you and some will not.
Check them out below:
All three Sonic The Hedgehog movies are on this list and that’s mighty impressive. It’s a testament to how far the franchise has come and improved since that disastrous initial ‘ugly Sonic’ reveal. If not for this movie, we wouldn’t have gotten the first well-received video game movie trilogy in history.
While this movie failed to start a new live-action franchise or spawn new sequels, it was actually a decent historical epic movie with fantasy elements. It’s hard to imagine how a concept as cool as Prince Of Persia or Assassin’s Creed can be so difficult to adapt to live-action when all the elements are already there in the games.
This was a surprisingly funny movie, despite being adapted from a simple mobile game with no discernable story or plot. Did it need any more sequels? No.
Again, kudos to the people behind the Sonic The Hedgehog movies. By the time this sequel came out, it’s clear that they had a lot of passion and love for the games. Idris Elba as Knuckles is a revelation!
This is one of the worst entries on this list. No one really liked this movie, which felt more like a generic action heist movie instead of an adaptation of the great games from Naughty Dog. Instead of a prequel setting with a young Nathan Drake, they should have just gone with a more straightforward adaptation of the games.
This was back when The Rock could still sell movies.
This is a decent and epic fantasy movie in its own right. Fantasy movies are rare enough these days, so this really should have gotten a sequel, at least.
Despite being the most recent entry on this list, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has managed to grab third place, showcasing how far this franchise has come. Not only that, this is the only third-entry sequel on this list.
In the meantime, check out my glowing review of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 here or check out our breakdown of the movie’s ending and post-credits scenes.
The Pokémon franchise is perhaps one of the most popular game franchises in the world, so it’s shocking that it took them this long to make a live-action movie. That being said, this movie wasn’t perfect and it’s bizarre that Warner Bros. has yet to make a proper follow-up or sequel to this movie in the years since it premiered.
It’s surprisingly no surprise that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is at the top of this list. The Mario brand and franchise is on another level entirely, especially as it also appeals to gamers of all ages. It doesn’t seem possible that any other video game movie in the foreseeable future will be able to beat this movie at the box office. It’s likely that The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be able to hold this crown for a long time to come, at least until another Mario movie comes along (or a Zelda movie).
