Check Out The First Final Fantasy Commander Decks From Magic: The Gathering

We don’t normally report on Magic: The Gathering and collectible card games, but when the latest collaboration for the Wizards of the Coast money-maker involves Square Enix’s Final Fantasy series, our curiosities are piqued big-time.
Wizards of the Coast unveils the first Final Fantasy expansion’s Commander Decks (pre-made decks that you can buy and play off the bat), or rather four of them (via IGN). The four of them are led by Legendary Creature cards, all of them from your favourite Final Fantasy games: FFVI’s Terra, FFVII’s Cloud Strife, FFX’s Tidus, and FFXIV’s Y’sthola. Here’s the official press release from WotC’s Senior Game Designer Daniel Holt.
“Final Fantasy games are so rich with flavor, beloved characters, and unique settings that choosing a single game as the theme provided more than enough material to design a full deck of cards around.”
Check out their abilities and powers below:
The expansion will be out in 13 June 2025, and will be a fully draftable Standard-legal set. Each of these Commander Decks will have 100 cards made up of both reprints of existing cards (think Lightning Strike but with FF art) and brand-new cards. Each of these pre-constructed decks will be built around a single Final Fantasy game, meaning zoomers will gravitate towards FFXIV’s Y’shtola deck while old-school fans like myself will lean towards FFVI’s Terra deck.
