Created by Robert Kirkman (and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley), Invincible revolves around 17-year-old Mark Grayson who learns that he has inherited incredible powers from his superhero alien father, Omni-Man. The comic series ran for 144 issues from 2003 to 2018, with many spinoffs and its own cohesive shared universe.
I’ll be discussing heavy spoilers so if you haven’t seen it or want to avoid spoilers, now’s your chance to stop reading.
The plot summary: Angstrom Levy is alive, gets repaired by mysterious beings called the Technicians, and summons a bunch of evil Invincibles/Mark Graysons from alternate universes to tarnish prime Earth Invincible’s name. How? By wrecking the entire world and its landmarks.
Invincible tries to stop a few of the evil clones, but Atom Eve got injured bad and that hampered his spirit. Mark’s brother Oliver helps out, and we have a bunch of Robert Kirkman’s other heroes helping out but to little avail. Rex Splode ends up being a casualty as he sacrifices his life by killing one of the evil Invincibles. And his life was going so well too in Season 3, what with his relationship with Shrinking Rae and all.
After 3 days, the Invincibles group up above Mark’s home (with some dialogue about some of the Mark missing his mom while others remarked on killing her in their own universes) and convene with Angstrom. After an argument, the Invincibles were sent to the same desolate hellhole Angstrom trapped the OG Invincible that one time. Then the eventual clash between OG Invincible and Angstrom takes place in a pretty neat fight sequence involving Angstrom’s drones. When Invincible gets the upper hand, Oliver jumps in and convinces him to kill Angstrom as he caused all this destruction. Invincible was close to doing so, but Angstrom manages to escape but loses an arm out of the ordeal. Then the Technicians decide to keep Angstrom around as their worker as he has reneged on their requests and deals.
Invincible contributes to cleaning up the city, though he got into a minor scuffle with Powerplex (whom we’ll see more in later stories). Then a Viltrumite named Conquest comes in to reclaim the planet from Invincible. They both get into a fight and then cliffhanger; episode 8 is going to be a helluva duel. And there will be blood.
Now, onto the comparisons & references!
Angstrom Levy sends multiple variants of Invincibles to attack the world. From a Viltrumite Mark with a mustache to even one with a cape and one with a mohawk(?), we get all kinds of evil Mark Graysons.
The Astounding Wolf-Man makes a cameo in this episode, fighting one of the alternate Invincibles.
The character is a spin-off of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible, the series was created and written by Kirkman with art by Jason Howard.
He’s a hero from the Invincible comics. He has guns and fights blindfolded; like a mix between Iron Fist and Daredevil. You’ll see him in more Invincible soon enough.

The character is a spin-off of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible, wearing an alien armour. You’ll see more of him in future Invincible stories.
Brit is also another superhero created by Robert Kirkman, voiced in the animated show by Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad’s Mike). You’ll see him in more Invincible stories later.
It’s basically a Robert Kirkman hero showcase here!
RIP Rex. It happened just like in the comics. The animated series really made this part all the more tragic because of his blossoming relationship with Shrinking Rae throughout the season, with things actually looking up for the smart-mouthed explosion-making hero. Way to go for the jugular!
Yes, it’s a treat for horror fans to hear the Technicians speak down to Angstrom Levy. You’ll see more of them as more Invincible stories unravel.
Conquest is the biggest threat that Invincible has ever faced, voiced here by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen’s Comedian, The Walking Dead’s Neegan that’s also another Robert Kirkman series). He’s like the Broly or the Doomsday of the Invincible universe; you’ll be expecting an ass-kicking from this guy.
Next week’s finale will be epic. Until next week, excelsior!
