Mickey 17 Heads To Streaming Soon

So, imagine clocking in for work, only to be vaporised, dismembered, or gassed by some unholy cosmic mishap. Rinse, repeat. That’s the glamorous new normal for Robert Pattinson in Mickey 17, Bong Joon Ho’s latest sci-fi fever dream, premiering exclusively on Max on 23 May in Malaysia.

Check out our full review!

Yes, that Bong Joon Ho—the man who made Parasite and made everyone hate rich people even more—has returned, and this time, he’s brought spaceships, moral quandaries, and enough dead Pattinsons to start a boyband. Based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, this bleakly bonkers film is what happens when you cross Interstellar with The Office, but make it deeply existential and occasionally hilarious.

Our protagonist, Mickey Barnes, is what the future workplace calls an “Expendable”—a cloneable employee paid (we assume) to repeatedly die in humanity’s quest to colonise new worlds. Every time Mickey dies, a new version wakes up with the same memories but none of the PTSD therapy. It’s the sort of HR policy that makes your unpaid overtime look downright wholesome.

And it’s not just a one-Pattinson show. The cast is stacked: Star Wars’ Naomi Ackie, Beef’s Steven Yeun, Hereditary’s Toni Collette, and the ever-gravely Mark Ruffalo all show up for the chaos. Throw in some executive producing by Brad Pitt—because of course—and you’ve got one of 2025’s biggest streaming events.

Now, if you’re still on the fence, we’ve already reviewed the thing—and yes, it slaps harder than a clone’s first breath in a cold vacuum. As we put it:

“While some subplots involving characters like Kai and the pint-sized scientist Dorothy could’ve used a few extra scenes for emotional payoff, this is still a must-watch. Between Pattinson juggling double roles and dying from every possible sci-fi hazard imaginable—nuclear gas, rogue space gear, you name it—Bong’s latest is a darkly funny, smartly written take on the perils of space colonisation and the very human baggage we bring with us.”

So yes, multiple Robert Pattinsons meet gruesome ends in space, but the real story here is a satirical, thought-provoking slice of speculative fiction that hits a little too close to home. Or Earth. Whichever one’s still standing.

Mickey 17 starts streaming on 23 May on Max, available via the usual suspects—Astro, Unifi TV, or directly through the Max app for RM34.90/month or RM279.90/year. Just don’t blame us when you start questioning your job’s “non-lethal” clause.
