Samsung Rewrites the Rules for Foldables In Galaxy Unpacked July 2026

In 2019, Samsung shook the mobile world when they became the first major smartphone maker to release a globally-available foldable device with the original Galaxy Z Fold. With a then-decent-but-small-by-today’s-standards 4.6 inch outer and 7.3 inch inner display, Samsung played the trailblazer card in the foldables space.

Fast forward seven years later, they are back at it being ahead of the curve.

While some brands who only jump into the fad once it matures, Samsung continued their habit of testing new waters. Of course, this comes with a huge risk of it bombing as this is basically open waters they are jumping into but has it stopped them before? Not a chance.

Of course, the star pupil of Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked July 2026 is the latest iteration of Samsung’s flagship foldable, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. In spite of the ‘Ultra’ moniker, this is essentially the direct successor to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 with key improvements on all major areas.

Built tougher with – from what we’ve experienced first-hand – almost unnoticeable crease in its ‘open’ form, the Fold 8 Ultra now boasts the largest screens exhibited on any Samsung foldable; an ‘outer’ 6.5-inch screen when closed and when unfurled, a massive 8-inch screen. Those who love multitasking on their Galaxy Z Fold devices would be happy to know that this 8-inch screen is essentially two 6.5-inch screens side by side for maximum productivity. At 215g, the Ultra matches the Z Fold 7 in weight but is thinner, measuring at 8.9mm folded, 4.1mm unfolded.

Samsung also bumped up the storage to 5000mAh making it their most robust Z-series device to date. With a rear camera package featuring 200MP wide (f1.7), 50MP ultrawide (f2.2) and a 10MP telephoto (f2.4), the Ultra offers the best camera setup for those aiming to cop a folding device from Samsung in 2026.

But the fun does not stop there.

Also unveiled is what we feel, the other star of the show. A breath of fresh air and a definite conversation starter, the Z Fold device carrying the ‘standard’ Z Fold 8 name looks a bit different this year. Instead of a typical candy bar form factor, the Z Fold 8 now sports a slightly shorter yet wider stance.

The ‘passport look’ distinguishes it from the Ultra in more ways than one. The more compact dimension allows easier one-handed navigation on a 5.5-inch cover and once opened, provides a 4:3 aspect ratio via a 7.6-inch screen. While the rear camera module is a slight ‘downgrade’ from what’s on the Ultra, the 50MP wide (f1.9) and 50MP ultrawide(f1.8) combo is no slouch.

That said, the ‘normal’ and ‘Ultra’ devices share the same build characteristics and what’s under the hood. Both come with Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 for the screen and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for their back covers. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy powers both devices ensuring maximum performance.

The third foldable unveiled is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8. Set to be the thinnest and lightest of its lineup, the Flip 8 now comes with upgraded features for its ‘camcorder’ video recording mode … and that’s as far as we can identify. Other features remain pretty much the same such as same battery capacity, screen brightness and our least favourite feature, powered by an Exynos 2600 chip.

Alongside these foldables were the updated versions of the Samsung Galaxy watches in the Watch 9 and the Watch Ultra 2 which is the best smartwatch Samsung has to offer. More than merely devices to track the user’s health vitals, Samsung’s have pivoted to the preventive health approach moving forward. Through analysis and insights of health parameters, Samsung smartwatches embraces proactive health monitoring by tracking blood oxygen, heart rate variability, skin temp, heart rate & respiratory rate. These data are then consolidated into an easily-tracked baseline to better detect potential health issues.
