EA Said Halo Infinite’s Surprise Launch Ruined Battlefield 2042

Electronic Arts is not getting a break regarding its lacklustre Battlefield 2042 launch.

The company reportedly said that some of Battlefield 2042’s struggles were due to the surprise early launch of Halo Infinite’s polished multiplayer experience. For context, Battlefield 2042 came out last November and was not well-received, with a huge number of people signing a petition demanding EA to offer players unconditional refunds.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson blamed factors such as teams working from home for nearly 2 years and unanticipated performance issues when the game was played at scale. We’re talking about a game that is expected to play en masse since, well, the first Battlefield back in the 2000s.

Fistbump-made-human-form Andrew also said that the game’s design choices did not resonate with everyone in the community. The Battlefield 2042 problems were also brought up in an EA town hall meeting this week according to industry insider Tom Henderson. EA chief operating officer Laura Miele reiterated what Andrew said, along with the Halo Infinite issue. Here’s what Henderson was told in his Xfire report:

“Following the game’s launch, DICE rolled out its Day 1 and Day 0 patches to get the bug count down further. On this, Miele continued and said that Battlefield 2042’s launch and patches meant ‘the game was stable’ and ‘the early critical reception was good’.

However, according to EA, things took a turn, and that turn was… the surprise release of Halo: Infinite multiplayer (I wish I was joking).

According to Miele, the comparison between both games was not favourable because Halo Infinite was a very polished title whereas Battlefield 2042 contained bugs and wasn’t as polished.”

Video game-making is tough, especially with a big company that needs all hands on deck with a big release like Battlefield 2042. But honestly, shouldn’t a company like EA learn to shape up, especially when the cracks of a franchise started showing since Battlefield 4 back in 2013?
