Ghostrunner: Project Hel Is More Of The Same, And That’s Fine

Platform(s): PC (version reviewed), PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, Xbox One
Genre: First-person cyber ninja parkour

Ever wanted to be a super-fast cyberninja parkouring through the mean sci-fi streets and killing bad guys with your sword? 2020’s Ghostrunner lets you do just that in style.

The new DLC Ghostrunner: Project Hel adds a few more levels and a new playstyle: what happens if you have a super-high jump, two hit points instead of one, and a Rage mode that lets you fire awesome red horizontal blade projectiles? That’s what Project Hel offers: you play Ghostrunner boss Hel who is on a mission to head to Dharma Tower and kill everyone in her wake.

Soulless

Part of the DLC’s charm is how inhuman Hel is. Her many conversations with her handler Mara is so devoid of morals; Hel is built as a mission-driven killing machine so her responses are apt and darkly humourous.

The main issue many will find is that Project Hel is reusing and reworking a lot of Ghostrunner’s content. That’s fine as long as it feels fresh, and it does feel like that for the most parts. The new challenges that test Hel’s new “hyper jump”, leap, and Rage abilities do add more replayability and changes up your playstyle a tad. Fans will find a lot to love here as well as find out more about Hel’s background and drive.

Neon Dynasty

For the price of US$14.99, Ghostrunner’s new DLC offers a good amount of high-octane stages and challenges, not to mention a new character playstyle that’s not too different but still fun. If you crave more Ghostrunner parkour and slice-and-dicing, you’ll want to jump into this neon-lit thrill ride.

Final Score: 80/100
