Sorry, Batgirl fans waiting for a standalone movie for the upcoming sidekick heroine.

Warner Bros Discovery will not be releasing its upcoming Batgirl movie in theaters and on streaming service HBO Max. The film stars In The Heights actress Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon and costs up to US$90 million to produce due to reshoots, shutdowns, and COVID-19 issues.

But why though? Leads of the studio making the film decided ultimately, and so late in the project too, that despite the increased budget and reshoots, that the movie simply did not work (via New York Post). The studio is committed to making DC titles big event films, and Batgirl isn’t that, though the film’s directors (Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah) and star will be doing a different project since the higher-ups loved them.

This isn’t the only Warner Bros production that is shelved and with such a huge amount of money: animated feature Scoob! Holiday Haunt is also not coming out and that project costs US$40 million or so. In any case, comic book fans who want a more diverse take on the superheroine will be disappointed.
