Valorant Champions Tour 2022: North American Last Chance Qualifier – Underdogs 100 Thieves Win LCQ
By Lewis "lickety" Larcombe|August 15, 2022|0 Comment
In an amazing cinderella story, 100 Thieves take down The Guard and book themselves their ticket to Valorant Champions in Istanbul, Turkey.
The roster that will be attending the event in September will be Peter “Asuna” Mazuryk, Derrek “Derrek” Ha, Brenden “stellar“ McGrath, William “Will” Cheng and Sean “bang” Bezerra on loan from TSM. Joining them will be their coaches Sean “sgares” Gares and Michael “Mikes” Hockom.
Leading up to this event, 100 Thieves were a massive question mark in a lot of people’s books. This is because they recently overhauled their entire roster, only keeping Asuna from their championship-winning iteration, taking a risk with a mostly rookie roster. So going into this tournament, calling 100 Thieves “underdogs” would be generous.
They started off the tournament hot by defeating the likes of NRG in Round 1 of the upper bracket. They would go on to face FaZe Clan next where they would suffer a loss and be sent down into the lower bracket.
The main talking point of the event was Sentinels with their addition of Michael “shroud” Grzesiek and Jordan “Zellsis” Montemurro. Unfortunately, that hype would be short-lived as they would be sent home after losing 1–2 to 100 Thieves.
100T would then take down Cloud9 2–0 where they would be pitted against FaZe once more. This time around the series would favour 100T as they sweep FaZe 3–0, securing their spot in the Grand Finals where they would play The Guard.
The Guard looked dominant throughout this entire tournament and because of this, many analysts and fans thought that The Guard would definitely qualify. But if esports has taught us anything it’s that anything can happen. 100 Thieves took Game 1, Icebox and Game 2, Fracture pretty convincingly with scorelines of 13–7 and 13–6 respectively. Game 3 was a little bit closer but the momentum favoured 100T and they inevitably closed out the Haven 13–9. And with that 100 Thieves claim the last North American spot at Champions, joining OpTic Gaming and XSET.
