Magic: The Gathering Now Features Optimus Prime & Transformers

Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro have revealed new Magic: The Gathering cards for the Brothers’ War expansion, and it’s more than meets the eye.

For the first time, the Transformers will be playable Magic: The Gathering cards during Hasbro’s PulseCon reveal. The cards will be featured as the first Universes Beyond set that exists within another normal expansion. The six new cards revealed are:

  • Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader / Optimus Prime, Hero
  • Goldbug, Scrappy Scout / Goldbug, Humanity’s Ally
  • Starscream, Seeker Leader / Starscream, Power Hungry
  • Soundwave, Superior Captain / Soundwave, Sonic Spy
  • Flamewar, Streetwise Operative / Flamewar, Brash Veteran
  • Slicer, High-Speed Antagonist / Slicer, Hired Muscle

Seeing as these robots can transform into cars and planes, these creature cards will use the double-faced mechanics established since the Innistrad expansion. When you fulfill certain conditions, the face-up card will transform to the card’s face-down side. According to an IGN report, there will be 15 Transformers cards in total. Each of them will be in two different styles; one depicts the G1 versions of the 80s cartoon/toyline, while the other depicts the latest Shattered Glass comics where the Autobots are the bad guys and the Decepticons are good. Nemesis Prime, anyone?

Because of their unique mechanics, these cards are only playable in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage format. So no using these bad boys in Standard tournament formats.

The Transformers aren’t the only popular pop culture IPs integrated into Magic: The Gathering. The CCG company also featured a Warhammer 40K collection, as well as special Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, and Arcane: League of Legends sets.
