This Is Why Disney’s Strange World Will Not Release In Malaysia

Sorry, Disney fans in Malaysia. Strange World will not premiere in Malaysian cinemas.
Strange World is supposed to be the next animated movie from Walt Disney Animation Studios, but it’s been confirmed that we won’t be getting it in cinemas in Malaysia. Why won’t Strange World premiere in Malaysian cinemas? Well, it’s because the movie features an openly-gay key character named Ethan (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White), who has a crush on another boy in the movie.
A Disney spokesperson confirmed to Deadline that they are unwilling to make any edits that would impact storytelling, and they have made the preemptive decision not to submit the movie to censorship authorities where it would be almost impossible for movies featuring LGBT elements to be approved without significant cuts.
Strange World will not be released in cinemas in these countries:
The statement from the Disney spokesperson reads:
“In countries where we operate, we seek to share our stories in their original form as we and the artists involved have created them. If we make edits, because of legal or other considerations, they will be as narrow as possible. We will not make an edit where we believe it would impact the storytelling. In that circumstance, we will not distribute the content in that market.”
Strange World introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures.
The voice cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old son, Ethan, who longs for adventure; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia’s fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange world. “Strange World” is helmed by Don Hall (“Big Hero 6,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer “Raya and the Last Dragon”), and produced by Roy Conli (“Big Hero 6,” “Tangled”).
