Redfall Requires Online Connection In Single & Multiplayer Mode, Which Is Normal In Today’s Standards

Bethesda and developer Arkane has mentioned in its recently-published FAQ that players will need to be permanently connected online, regardless of whether they’re in single-player or multiplayer mode.

While players can go through the game solo without an Xbox Gold subscription, they will still need to stay online and connected. In addition, a Bethesda.net account is required to even access the game.

“Q: will playing Redfall require an online connection for single player as well as co-op?
A: A persistent online connection is required for single player and co-op.”

For those wondering if single-player games needing to stay online is uncommon, we should remind you that Redfall is primarily a multiplayer co-op title. Much like how action RPGs like Diablo 3 and Path of Exile’s single-player modes require you to stay online as they both have multiplayer components, Redfall is basically doing the same thing here.

Then again, titles like Gotham Knights and Marvel’s Avengers allow for offline play in single-player mode, but who the f*** cares about those two games now?

On a serious note, this may go against the recent promotion Xbox has done in favour of game preservation via its backwards compatibility program; basically the ability to play old titles and doing it offline without any online checks whatsoever. It remains to be seen if Arkane can do a workaround in making the game go single-player offline, depending on the game’s network and co-op infrastructure. That’s something that is usually hard to backtrack after years of developing a game in a certain way (multiplayer co-op in this case).
