The Microsoft Acquisition Of Activision Blizzard Has Been Approved By The EU Commission

One of gaming’s biggest acquisitions might be happening after much contesting.

The European Commission has approved Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard (and King too); ditto Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Serbia, Chile, Japan, South Africa, and Ukraine. According to Video Games Chronicle, as long as Microsoft complies with a number of commitments related to cloud gaming, the acquisition will go through. As a reminder, this deal is worth US$69 billion.

As icing on the cake, this deal is said to not harm rival consoles and rival multi-game subscription services, though it could harm competition in the distribution of games via cloud gaming streaming services. The EU said the deal will support competition and that Call of Duty is not as important as Sony makes it out to be.

Still, Microsoft will have to win the UK CMA appeal and also win its case against the US FTC in order for the whole deal to go through. In addition, this is what the company is committing to for 10 years in the licensing department:

  • A free license to consumers in the EEA that would allow them to stream, via any cloud game streaming services of their choice, all current and future Activision Blizzard PC and console games for which they have a license.
  • A corresponding free license to cloud game streaming service providers to allow EEA-based gamers to stream any Activision Blizzard’s PC and console games.

“These licenses will ensure that gamers that have purchased one or more Activision games on a PC or console store, or that have subscribed to a multi-game subscription service that includes Activision games, have the right to stream those games with any cloud game streaming service of their choice and play them on any device using any operating system. The commitments fully address the competition concerns identified by the Commission and represent a significant improvement for cloud gaming as compared to the current situation.”
