Respawn Will Be Reviving Medal Of Honor As A VR Game For Oculus

Good news, old-school shooter fans: EA’s Medal of Honor series is making a comeback. But don’t expect it to be your regular shooter like last time.

Apex Legends and Titanfall creator Respawn will be turning the latest in the military shooter franchise as a VR game exclusively for the Oculus Rift. Basically, this is the “triple-A VR game” the company mentioned 2 years ago before the fated EA buyout. The new title will be called Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond and will be set in World War II.

There’s some shred of hope for those disappointed by this news: the original Medal of Honor’s producer and writer Peter Hirschmann will be working on this game.

“We’re trying to make the most authentic World War II game possible,” said Hirschmann. “That does not mean we’re trying to make the most realistic one.” He stressed that the game will draw the line between “authentic” and “realistic”.

You will use the Oculus motion controllers to pick up, hold, aim, and fire your weapon, as well as pretend to grab ammo from your left hip and then pop it to your gun. You won’t be putting the gun back in the holster. The game will feature a 10 to 12-hour campaign mode spread across 50 different levels and also a “full suite” of multiplayer modes. And just like the 1999 original, there will be a heavy educational element to the release;

Respawn already conducted interviews with many World War II veterans and partnered with organization Honor Flight, which flies veterans to memorials in Washington, D.C. The company is also scanning archival footage from the Library of Congress into 4K to make the upcoming game all the more authentic.

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will be out 2020. Whether it’ll be a tipping point for gamers to buy an Oculus Rift for its selling points, we’ll never know until next year. Though it’s nice to see Respawn/previous Infinity Ward come back full circle to the series that launched a thousand military shooters.
