KKP Best Of 2020: Game #5

For the rest of 2020’s top gaming picks, head here.

#5: Umurangi Generation

Imagine Pokemon Snap, but in a cyberpunk world where everything’s gone to hell in a handbasket with each passing day. That’s Umurangi Generation in a nutshell; a small-time indie project that blends in photo-journalism gameplay and let its many sights and sounds tell its tale.

You can chill and relax, take photos and bide your time while absorbing the atmosphere. Umurangi Generation eventually shows you that something is amiss in this “sh** future” (said on the product description). And it does so slowly but surely, and effectively to boot.

What it does well is shows you; it doesn’t tell you jack and requires you to unfurl its narrative layers without any assistance whatsoever. Granted, you can finish the game in an afternoon. However, everything about it, especially in the context of a bystander and passive observer, will stick out and haunt you while its lo-fi music plays on in the background.

All I’m saying is don’t skip out on this red-sky journey.
