The Top 10 Pixar Moments That Give You The Feels

5. When She Loved Me In “Toy Story 2”

Ah, this scene reminds me of my childhood. Jesse tells her story in which she was replaced and dumped in the middle of the road.

What had me crying: The perfectly paired soundtrack and the scene made me sad. Knowing that you’re being replaced with something else. To all the toys I have abandoned before, I’m sorry.

4. When Food Reminds You Of Home In “Ratatouille”

Ego eats.jpg

The food critic, Ego, is a cold person, but in this scene, he tries out the rat chef Remy’s take of ‘confit byaldi’, a variation of the French cuisine, ratatouille. Ego was sceptical at first, but after a single mouth of the food, he was taken back to his childhood.

What had me crying: Totally relatable. After travelling almost the entire country in the quest of education, you’ll start to miss your mother’s cooking, made with love and care. When I stumble upon food that resembles her cooking, I’ll be damned well attached to that place emotionally, because the food reminds me of the simpler times at home.

3. When The Fishes Unite In “Finding Nemo”

Dory is caught in the trawling net alongside hundreds of groupers and was lost in the school of panicking fish. Nemo sparks an idea and swims into the crowd, but Marlin, worried that he might lose his only son again, stops Nemo. Determined to save his friend, Nemo tells his dad to trust him.

What had me crying: The heroic and brave act of Nemo, who was often overlooked by his peers along his journey, gets a moment to shine. The concerted effort of the groupers together to avoid their close encounter with death was enough to push me over the edge.

2. When Bing Bong ‘Disappears’ in “Inside Out”

When Joy and Riley’s imaginary friend was trapped in the Memory Dump abyss, they needed to find a way out. They figured out a way out of the abyss: by using the rocket wagon. After two failed attempts, Bing Bong realised that the wagon was too heavy to make the jump, thus he sacrificed himself for Joy and Riley.

What had me crying: The entire scene leading up to this moment where Joy finally understands Sadness’ purpose is already a strong primer for this moment.

Especially when Bing Bong tells Joy this: “Take her to the moon for me. Okay?”, and proceeds to fade out of existence.

In retrospect, this moment is actually sadder than it is. Bing Bong didn’t just ‘die’. Dying implies one is lost but not forgotten. Instead, Bing Bong was forgotten. When something is forgotten, it ceases to exist. His selfless act broke me into tears when the movie first premiered in 2015.

We will remember your sacrifice, Bing Bong.

1. The Entire Movie: “Up”

Up.jpg

Oh ho, this is a heavy one. The entire movie is one helluva emotional roller coaster ride.

Carl and Ellie grow up together, getting married and live in the restored house. Ellie suffers a miscarriage and was told that they couldn’t have a child. The couple remembers their dream to visit Paradise Falls. They save for the trip but repeatedly breaks their savings on more pressing needs. When Carl could finally afford the trip, Ellie suddenly falls ill, and despite being treated in a hospital, she passes away.

What had me crying: The entire premise of the movie is enough to make one shed tears. The miscarriage, the unforgiving financial problems, the retirement home, Russell, the journey, Ellie’s scrapbook, the house landing on Paradise Falls. Everything.

The opening scene was already enough to send a heart-tugging message: Fulfill your dreams with the ones you love before it’s too late.

This entire scene is art. Not a single word was uttered on-screen yet the emotions were conveyed perfectly and strongly.

The story is deeper than what is on screen. If you missed it, a fan came up with a theory that makes this sad movie just downright depressing. In essence: Carl Fredricksen died in his sleep the night after he returns from court with the order that he vacate to a retirement home (as a result of the incident with the construction worker and the mailbox). Everything that happened afterwards represents Carl’s journey through the Afterlife.

Think about that.

That’s enough Pixar moments for me today. Excuse me while I cry on the sofa while reliving the moments listed above, or just let me go punch a wall to feel manly again.

So, did you cry during any of the movies listed above? Do you think there are more Pixar movies that should’ve made the list? Drop them down in the comments below.
