When talking about superhero games, the superheroes that comes to most people’s minds nowadays are usually either Batman or Spider-Man. For a long time, the Arkham games stood out as an example of how superhero games should be done. Insomniac took that statement seriously and came out with, what I think is, the best Spider-Man game so far.

Most of Spider-Man‘s gameplay isn’t anything groundbreaking but it nails the fundamentals of what people look for in a Spider-Man game. The combat heavily mimics the system found in the Arkham games but incorporates Spidey’s fast movements, his gadgets, and the Spider Sense.

Side missions aren’t very creative but they periodically pop up nearby as you’re swinging through the city and this actually succeeds in making me feel like a superhero who has to own up to “with great power, comes great responsibility”.

And speaking of the swinging, oh my god the swinging. A year later, I still get into the game just to swing around the city for a few minutes and maybe stop a few robberies along the way. The momentum and fluidity of the swinging in Spider-Man makes it, in my opinion, the best movement system ever made in a video game. It’s simply magical.
