Netflix September 2020: Our Highlights & Picks

Since everyone is (still mostly) staying home because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, I’m sure you won’t want to waste time sifting through Netflix’s extensive catalogue of shows and movies just to decide on what to watch. The streaming giant updates its site every day, week, and month with new content, so I’m here to save your precious time.

Here are my personal recommendations and highlights for Netflix Malaysia’s September 2020 lineup and how to fill up your free time with worthwhile content at home:

Away (4 September 2020)

AWAY (L to R) RAY PANTHAKI as RAM ARYA and HILARY SWANK as EMMA GREEN, in episode 109 of AWAY. Cr. DIYAH PERA/NETFLIX © 2020

From the visionary who brought us Friday Night Lights comes an epic and emotional TV series starring two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank. This looks like an interesting and inspiring premise, but it remains to be seen if the series will be able to sustain its 10-episode first season run.

The synopsis reads:

As she embarks on a treacherous three-year-long mission to Mars commanding an international crew, Emma Green must leave her husband and teen daughter behind.

#Alive (8 September 2020)

Fans of Train To Busan and zombie movies, in general, will probably find something to like in #Alive, a new South Korean zombie film directed by Cho Il-hyung, as well as starring Yoo Ah-in and Park Shin-hye.

The synopsis reads:

As a grisly virus rampages a city, a lone man stays locked inside his apartment, digitally cut off from seeking help and desperate to find a way out.

The Devil All The Time (16 September 2020)

In Knockemstiff, Ohio and its neighboring backwoods, sinister characters; an unholy preacher (Robert Pattinson), twisted couple (Jason Clarke and Riley Keough), and crooked sheriff (Sebastian Stan), converge around young Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) as he fights the evil forces that threaten him and his family.

Spanning the time between World War II and the Vietnam war, director Antonio Campos’ The Devil All The Time renders a seductive and horrific landscape that pits the just against the corrupted.

Co-starring Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd, Mia Wasikowska, Harry Melling, Haley Bennett, and Pokey LaFarge, this suspenseful, finely-woven tale is adapted from Donald Ray Pollock’s award-winning novel.

Dragon’s Dogma (17 September 2020)

Based on the Capcom game of the same, Shin’ya Sugai of 009 Re: Cyborg fame will be directing and producing the anime, while Taiki Sakurai (Cannon Busters) will be executive producer.

The synopsis reads:

After losing his home to a dragon, Ethan sets out to hunt it down once and for all. A pawn appears by his side and serves to protect his life.

But the dangers that lie in wait for Ethan are beyond their imaginations, for when you fight a monster… you just may become one too.

Enola Holmes (23 September 2020)

When Enola Holmes; Sherlock’s teen sister, discovers her mother missing, she sets off to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord.

Starring Millie Bobby Brown, Sam Claflin, with Henry Cavill (as Sherlock Holmes himself) and Helena Bonham-Carter. Directed by Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag).

Those are just several selected highlights from next month’s offerings of new TV series and movies on Netflix. Now you can plan your Netflix binge-fest for September 2020.
