The Best Video Games Of This Console Generation (Late 2013-2020)

Double Helix & Iron Galaxy Games’ sequel to the Killer Instinct franchise is hands-down the best fighting game of the console generation that arguably surpasses Capcom’s fifth mothership effort by a wide margin.
Killer Instinct has way more innovations with its mechanics, roster, has stable netplay, and great overall quality-of-life features. The combo system from past games get a huge upgrade here, and without complicating things further, is a good mix of gratifying damage-dealing and counterattack mind games that most great fighting games feature. It’s also topped with the best soundtrack & aesthetics in the genre, as well as some sweet single-player offerings. Did we also forget to mention that it also went the Super Smash Bros. route and rope in characters from other Xbox games? Killer cut cameos indeed.
The fact that the game got the shaft in favour of other fighting games that won the popularity contest is a crime most foul. But hey, them’s the breaks. Killer Instinct is a complete package of a fighting game, and nothing is further from this actual truth.

Divinity Original Sin 2 (2017) – Great CRPG with an in-depth plot, character banter system, great combat. Superior to its prequels and predecessor; the culmination of Larian’s hard CRPG work.
God of War (2018) – Sets the standard for third-person action games with cinematic and narrative feel. Also a grand new reboot of a franchise that is tired and outdated.
Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) – A stellar example of how to make the best comic book superhero game. The story and characters in Marvel’s Spider-Man elevates it above most comic book games. -The DLC is pretty good too and adds a ton of story moments post-game.
Apex Legends (2019) – Shakes up the battle royale scene, as well as being a huge improvement over existing games like PUBG and Fortnite. In addition, its 3-player team dynamic works to its favour in standing out among the pack.
Control (2019-2020) – A third-person shooter with Metroidvania elements and trippy sci-fi plot makes it a game that has to be experienced. There’s almost nothing else like it in this generation.
Ori & The Will of the Wisps (2020) – The best representation of a true Metroidvania 2D action game in this console cycle. It’s arguably superior to other former champs like Hollow Knight. And it’ll toughen your spirit with its hardcore challenge.
Hades (2020) – A great indie-esque roguelike that blends story and gameplay masterfully.
