Sony Will Keep PS3 & PS Vita Stores Alive, But Still Shutting Down PSP

Just last month, Sony announced that they would be shutting down the PlayStation Stores on the PlayStation 3 (PS3), PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) and PlayStation Portable (PSP). However, today, there’s good news for everyone as Sony has revealed that the PS3 and PS Vita stores will remain operational.

In a new PlayStation Blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan said that they will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices, but will still shutting down the PSP version on 2 July 2021 as was previously announced.

Ryan also explained why they wanted to shut down the PS3, PS Vita and PSP stores in the first place:

“When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on.

We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.”

This is a win for the games industry as a whole, as these old games will remain available for a while longer yet. PS3 and PS Vita will no longer have to worry about not being able to buy new games or losing their old ones. For now, at least. Unfortunately, PSP players will have to contend with their stores closing down.
