Xbox Wants To Continue Killer Instinct, But This Requires “Personal Passion”

If you’re hoping for an Xbox Killer Instinct fighting game sequel or follow-up, certain developers & fans may need to rise up to the challenge.

According to Xbox lead Phil Spencer on the Dropped Frames podcast, he said that the company needs the right team to make this work.

“There are so many good games in our catalogue that we’d love to visit. The response when we redid Killer Instinct at the launch of Xbox One was fantastic.

I will just say, [Xbox Game Studios head] Matt [Booty] and I have discussed many times KI and where we would like to go with it and it’s not out of our minds that—it might be out of our minds—but it’s in our hearts and in our minds that we want to continue to do something with KI.

It’s about finding the right team and the right opportunity, but it is not due to any kind of lack of desire on our part that we’re not doing more with KI because we love the franchise and the community response.

I think when somebody has a personal passion for it, it can really work out.”

The solution seems simple: get the original developers Double Helix and Iron Galaxy to work on the sequel under Microsoft’s umbrella. Based on past documentaries on the game, the talent is passionate enough to revisit the game and come up with new ideas for it. It won’t be easy to get the band back together since they have other projects at the moment, but we can dream, can’t we?

The Killer Instinct reboot came out in 2013 for Xbox One, then received a bunch of new characters and updates, as well as a PC port for Steam. The game has its following and is arguably one of the best fighting games of the past generation.
