Nintendo Switch OLED Version Officially Announced

Nintendo has officially announced the Nintendo Switch (OLED model). It will launch on 8 October 2021 for the price of US$349.99.

According to the official website, the new system features a vibrant 7-inch OLED screen, a wide adjustable stand, a dock with a wired LAN port, 64 GB of internal storage, and enhanced audio.

Nintendo Switch (OLED model) will let players experience enhancements in all three play modes:

TV mode: Set the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) system into the dock to play Nintendo Switch games on the TV. By using the built-in wired LAN port, players can enjoy another way to connect online in TV mode.

Tabletop mode: Flip the stand on the back of the system and use the system’s screen to play multiplayer games using two Joy-Con controllers right out of the box. A wide adjustable stand makes for a solid and sturdy foundation. It allows players to freely tilt the system and adjust the viewing angle, so it makes it easier to see the screen.

Handheld mode: Players can bring the system wherever they go in handheld mode and play local* or online** multiplayer with friends. The system’s 7-inch OLED screen provides vivid colour and crisp contrast.

When the system launches, it will come in two colour options:

  • Nintendo Switch (OLED model) white set, which features white Joy-Con controllers, a black main unit and a white dock.
  • Nintendo Switch (OLED model) neon red/neon blue set, which features neon red and neon blue Joy-Con controllers, a black main unit and a black dock.

Since the Nintendo Switch OLED model will be launching at the price of US$349.99, we should expect the updated hybrid console to fetch a price that’s around RM1700-RM2000 in Malaysia, considering that there’s no local regional support. All in all, this is a pretty disappointing announcement from Nintendo.

The Nintendo Switch OLED model doesn’t have any major internal hardware changes that affect performance, so it will still play the same games as the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch Lite. It only has a better screen and bigger storage, as well as other minor improvements like better audio. Most of that is mostly moot anyway if you mainly play connected to a TV.

The Nintendo Switch OLED model has the same battery as the standard (enhanced) Nintendo Switch. The battery is said to last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, which is exactly the same as the standard model.
