Twitch Partners With Universal Music Group; What Does This Mean For Livestream Gaming?
Twitch.tv just announced that it has entered an agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG) so that music fans on the streaming platform can gain access to some of the world’s most popular music and artists’ work.
Now before you start blasting your favourite Billie Eilish track while you’re farming on Diablo 3 or some other action RPG or online MMO, just keep in mind that the new process recognizes that not all unauthorized uses of music merits the same treatment and focuses on specific use-cases that are the most flagrant. The system will now be more flexible and forgiving to creators who accidentally include the right holders’ music in their stream. Creators will receive a warning before the first penalty is hit.
“This new process does not change how music can be used on Twitch. It’s never okay to include music in your channel unless you have the necessary rights or authority to do so. Including unauthorized music in your channel violates the rights of music creators and runs counter to Twitch’s mission of supporting all creators.”
Long story short: if your game has licensed music inadvertently playing that happens to belong under the UMG group (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and its OST for example), Twitch won’t penalize you straight up. If you purposefully stream that same Billie Eilish track in your livestreams, you will get penalized and rightfully so.
