R-Type Final 3 Evolved Slated For PlayStation 5

Not content with being completely final with its 2D shmup entry, the R-Type series is getting a revamped version of R-Type Final 2 for next gen consoles.

Made by Granzella, R-Type Final 3 Evolved (which is not a sequel mind you) will be out for PlayStation 5 in March 2023 (via a Famitsu leak covered by Ryokutya2089). This new version of R-Type Final 2 will feature improved visuals, over 100 playable ships from the classic R-Type games alongside obscure ones, seven exclusive new stages, PlayStation VR2 support for takeoff scenes, online multiplayer lobbies, and mini-games. There’s also a “Metaverse space” associated with the online play, but details are scarce.

Honestly, the new stages are enough to make this a follow-up with an appropriate “3” at the end, much like the old days when sequels are just expanded versions of past titles. Anyway, it’s nice to see a legacy shmup like R-Type still standing in this current gaming generation; the whole world needs to experience slow methodical left-to-right horizontal scrolling ship-piloting shooters with satellite options and funky-as-hell bio-metal monstrosities.
