Half-Life YouTuber To Plan Lawsuit Against Ubisoft
The argument for games as a service may come to a head if this upcoming plan from a YouTuber pulls through.
See, Ubisoft is going to shut down its old racing game The Crew (back in 2014) and its servers on 31 March of this year. While this announcement was made years ago, it does bring up a gray area in games where people who bought The Crew earlier will have their games made invalid.
Enter YouTuber Ross Scott (known as his channel Accursed Farms), is currently building a case to sue Ubisoft for shutting down The Crew which makes a game consumers bought previously “unusable and deprived of all value after the point of sale”. He is known for his Half-Life machinima series Freeman’s Mind back in 2007. He currently has 330k subscribers on YouTube.
Ross shares his plans for a class-action lawsuit against Ubisoft, claiming that the company “took money” in exchange for a “perpetual license”, which means it’s sold as a good, not a subscription.
“Then the seller rendered the game unusable and deprived it of all value after the point of sale. It’s possible that argument won’t hold up either, in which case I think there’s no possible way to stop this practice, at least in the United States. But to the best of my knowledge, this angle has never been tested in court and might actually have some teeth.
This is a high-profile game that was sold in stores under a perpetual license, and the buyers are going to be left with nothing. This is about as perfect an opportunity as we’re going to get to challenge the system on this.”
