Bungie Making Super Smash Bros-MOBA Hybrid Under PlayStation’s Wing

Imagine Bungie—the master of galactic sci-fi epics—swapping its star maps for something entirely unexpected: gummy bears in a brawl. Doesn’t sound quite right. But it couldn’t be more true. According to a recent report from The Game Post, the studio behind Destiny is diving headfirst into the world of vibrant multiplayer chaos with its latest IP, codenamed Gummy Bears, a MOBA-meets-Super Smash Bros. hybrid. This project, as zesty as its name, has officially jumped from Bungie to a newly minted PlayStation studio, guided by a team of about 40 Bungie veterans.
The game’s transition comes hot on the heels of mid-2024 layoffs at Bungie, shortly after the much-anticipated release of Destiny 2: The Final Shape. In a statement, Bungie said, “We are working with PlayStation Studios leadership to spin out one of our incubation projects… forming a new studio to continue its promising development.”
At its core, Gummy Bears is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game with a whimsical twist: Super Smash Bros.-style gameplay mechanics. Forget the traditional health bars—players take damage that increases their knockback percentage, making them easier to send flying off the map. It’s chaotic, it’s colourful, and, reportedly, it’s a blast.
This tonal pivot marks a deliberate move by Bungie to target a younger demographic—likely those who find towering sci-fi narratives a bit too heavy. In fact, insiders label Gummy Bears as Bungie’s “most fun” project to emerge from incubation, thanks to overwhelmingly positive playtests. It’s also been in the works for three years, with no signs of slowing down.
Adding to the intrigue, a recent Bungie patent hints at game mechanics that might completely shake up the MOBA formula. Imagine towers that don’t just sit there like lumps of sugar but dodge attacks, jump, and retaliate with devastating AoE stuns. This level of unpredictability could add layers of strategy and mayhem, making Gummy Bears a sugary standout in the genre.
With a refreshing mix of chaotic brawling and competitive strategy, Gummy Bears might just hit the sweet spot for MOBA fans tired of the same old formula. It’s bold, playful, and, if Bungie’s track record is anything to go by, probably a technical marvel. So, while it’s not exactly what Destiny sequel fans expected, this could be the game to remind us that gaming is meant to be fun—and maybe even a little silly.
