Esports Biggest Rivalry Is Now Possible Again With The Revival of Team Envy
By Lewis Larcombe|January 18, 2025|0 Comment
The esports scene just got a hefty dose of déjà vu, as Team Envy—yes, that Team Envy—is staging a triumphant return under its original owner, Mike “Hastr0” Rufail. And no, it’s not just a nameplate revival; this comeback includes the resurrection of their iconic Call of Duty and Overwatch brands. The boys in blue are ready to reclaim their place on the global stage.
Hastr0 took to X to announce the big news, confirming he has reacquired the Envy Gaming brand. This includes Team Envy, the Dallas Fuel (once a powerhouse in the Overwatch League), and Dallas Empire (remember their Call of Duty League glory days?).
I was recently given the chance to re-acquire @Envy along with the @DallasFuel and @DallasEmpire brands. I took that chance… #EoD pic.twitter.com/wJZgmrwFMc

Leading the charge in Envy’s return is an Apex Legends squad formerly known as Loan Sharks, featuring Dropped, Knoqd, and YanYa. Interestingly, Hastr0 didn’t need to dig too deep to assemble this team—Dropped and Knoqd were already part of OpTic’s Apex roster before the organisation exited the scene. A convenient reunion? Absolutely.
For those who may need a refresher: Envy, alongside OpTic and FaZe, was one of the original titans of the esports world, with its roots planted firmly in Call of Duty since its 2007 debut. Back then, Hastr0 wasn’t just the owner—he was a competitor under the Team EnVyUs banner. Over time, EnVyUs, later simplified to Envy, evolved into a cornerstone of competitive gaming, sparking one of esports’ fiercest rivalries with OpTic in a saga fondly known as eClassico. What began as Call of Duty showdowns quickly spread to other titles, cementing their names in esports history. And let’s not forget their crowning moment: the Dallas Empire’s victory at the CDL’s inaugural championship in 2020.
Envy’s Overwatch legacy isn’t any less dazzling. Who could forget the iconic roster that conquered OGN’s Overwatch APEX Season 1 in 2016? Later rebranded as Dallas Fuel, they went on to win the Overwatch League Championship in 2022, solidifying themselves as one of the league’s most beloved teams.
But in 2021, everything changed when Envy Gaming merged with OpTic Gaming, forming OpTic Texas. The Envy brand—and its trademark blue colour scheme—slowly faded into obscurity, replaced by OpTic’s green dominance across various esports titles. Until today, that is.
What’s next for Team Envy, Dallas Fuel, and Dallas Empire? Hastr0 is keeping his cards close to his chest for now. Over the years, Envy has dipped its toes into several esports, from Counter-Strike and League of Legends to Rocket League and VALORANT. Whether this revival will see them branching out again or sticking to their greatest hits remains a tantalising mystery.
One thing is certain, though: the blue is back, and it’s brighter than ever. Let the rivalries resume.
