The Fantastic Four First Steps Trailer Breakdown: Marvel’s First Family, Galactus & More

Marvel Studios has unveiled the first The Fantastic Four First Steps trailer.

Check out the ComicsLord’s breakdown of the trailer:

The Baxter Building Mentioned

We get to see the famous Baxter Building, which is the home of the Fantastic Four and an entire building owned by them.

Ben Grimm AKA The Thing & H.E.R.B.I.E.

We get our first look at Benjamin ‘Ben’ Grimm AKA The Thing, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. He looks pretty comics accurate to the original version designed by Jack Kirby.

Meanwhile, H.E.R.B.I.E. makes his live-action debut for the first time. In the comics, H.E.R.B.I.E. was created by Mister Fantastic and Master Xar of the Xandarians, who hoped that the robot could aid their search for Galactus. Now, he’s just their ally and part of the family as a sentient robot.

The Fantastic Four’s Origin

We see a brief recap of how the Fantastic Four got their powers when they got hit by cosmic rays while on a space mission.

We also get to see each of the Fantastic Four use their powers, with the exception of Reed Richards AKA Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal).

It’s cool seeing Susan ‘Sue’ Storm (Vanessa Kirby) using her Force Field powers.

A Meteor Shower

Is this part of Galactus’ arrival on this Earth?

This Is Not The Same Earth As The MCU’s Sacred Timeline

From the strange retro-futuristic technology of this Earth to the Fantastic Four already being established heroes (as evident from the kids wearing The Thing masks), it’s clear that this movie is not set on Earth-616 / Earth-199999 from the MCU.

John Malkovich As A Mysterious Old Man Who Might Be The Mole Man

This is actor John Malkovich in a mysterious unknown role.

However, we know that the Mole Man will appear in the movie, so Malkovich might be playing the Fantastic Four villain.

In the comics, the Mole Man is a recurring villain of the Fantastic Four and was also actually the very first villain featured in the very first issue of the Fantastic Four. His real name is Harvey Rupert Elder and he becomes the leader of an underground world called Subterranea, ruling over the native underground creatures named Moloids.

There are also rumours of him playing Ivan Kragoff AKA the Red Ghost, another Fantastic Four villain. However, this rumour is unsubstantiated and unconfirmed at the time of writing.

Galactus The Devourer Of Worlds

The MCU is finally giving us a proper comics-accurate design for Galactus, the Devourer Of Worlds and one of the most iconic villains in all of Marvel Comics. He will be voiced by Ralph Ineson.

We didn’t get to see the movie’s version of the Silver Surfer, but Marvel might be saving that for future trailers. Silver Surfer will be played by Julia Garner.

The Fantastic Four Assembles

All four members of the family all suited up in their glory.

Directed by Matt Shakman, the rest of the cast of The Fantastic Four First Steps so far includes:

  • Pedro Pascal – Reed Richards / Mr. Fantastic
  • Vanessa Kirby – Susan Storm / Invisible Woman
  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach – Benjamin ‘Ben’ Grimm / The Thing
  • Joseph Quinn – Johnny Storm AKA The Human Torch
  • Julia Garner – Shalla-Bal / Silver Surfer
  • Ralph Ineson – Galactus
  • John Malkovich – TBC (Possibly Mole Man)
  • Natasha Lyonne – TBC
  • Paul Walter Hauser – TBC
  • Sarah Niles – TBC

The official synopsis of the movie reads:

Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.

The Fantastic Four First Steps premieres in Malaysian cinemas on 25 July 2025.

Captain America Brave New World is the next Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to release on 13 February 2025. Recently, we were one of the few selected Malaysian media to participate in the global press conference for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Captain America Brave New World. They answered several questions, including one about what comics inspired Captain America Brave New World. Check out the full story by heading over here.
