Captain America Brave New World Producer Reveals The Classic Comics That Inspired The Movie

Courtesy of Disney, we were one of the few selected Malaysian media to participate in the global press conference for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Captain America Brave New World.
The press conference was attended by director Julius Onah, producer Nate Moore, producer Kevin Feige, Anthony Mackie (“Sam Wilson / Captain America”), Harrison Ford (“President Thaddeus Ross”), Danny Ramirez (“Joaquin Torres/Falcon”), Shira Haas (“Ruth Bat-Seraph”), Giancarlo Esposito (“Seth Voelker”), Tim Blake Nelson (“Samuel Sterns”/The Leader) and Xosha Roquemore (“Agent Leila Taylor”).
They answered several questions, including one about what comics inspired Captain America Brave New World.
Here’s what producer Nate Moore had to say:
“You know, there’s also a run from 1974, the Steve Englehart’s Secret Empire that we sort of took a little inspiration. In that case, it was Captain America realizing and butting heads with the President. As in all things, we pull a lot from different parts of comics history because there’s so much great material.
And there’s even great images, Ta-Nehisi Coates did a run with Captain America and the Red Hulk and there’s a really striking cover from probably 2018.
So, we really like to build it with a lot of different stories in the same way that the writers from publishing have always been pulling from each other. Part of the fun of these movies is really crafting it from the source material.”
It’s interesting that he mentions 1974’s Secret Empire comics because that arc originally ran from January to August 1974 in Captain America And The Falcon written by Steve Englehart and drawn by Sal Buscema, even though many out there are probably more familiar with the new 2017 Secret Empire crossover (from which we received this infamous Hail Hydra meme).
The original Secret Empire comic arc followed Captain America as he uncovers a conspiracy to discredit him perpetrated by the Secret Empire, which extends to the heights of the American presidency. He was framed and hunted by the President and the US Government, which turned out to be Hydra.
This is exactly what seems to be happening to Sam Wilson as Captain America in Captain America Brave New World as well, with the main difference being that it’s not Hydra behind it but Samuel Sterns AKA The Leader.
Meanwhile, the Ta-Nehisi Coates comic cover featuring Captain America fighting Red Hulk mentioned by Nate Moore is this one, which was no problem for the ComicsLord to find.
It’s from Captain America #26 written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and drawn by Leonard Kirk published in December 2020.
Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World follows Sam Wilson, who after meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red. The film is directed by Julius Onah and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore.
The movie stars Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, with Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford.
Captain America Brave New World premieres in cinemas on 13 February 2025. For my detailed breakdown of the previous Captain America Brave New World trailer, head on over here.
