Asia Games Beat: 14 June 2025
The big Summer Games Fest weekend of live showcases & game previews is over, and we’ve got the details of what’s in store in this week’s game news recap.
The Big Picture
“A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.”
A quote that floats around the games industry that still hits hard to this day. Nowhere is this more apparent than the release of action-adventure open world title Mindseye.
This highly-touted title from ex-Rockstar Games publisher Leslie Benzies’s studio Build A Rocket boasted a rich single-player narrative and promised ongoing user-generated content post-launch. The game came out on 11 June, with not a single reviewer in the world getting an early copy pre-launch. That is usually a bad sign for a troubled game.
Sure enough, content creators and reviewers’ early and late-game impressions of Mindseye were mostly negative. The game came out buggy, had a lot of technical issues with its stability, performance, and AI, and the narrative ended on an abrupt note. A huge number of PlayStation owners refunded the game en masse; the last time this happened was for Cyberpunk 2077’s troubled PlayStation 4 launch back in 2020.
The team are hard at work patching the title up this week, and most likely the next few as it is a proverbial car on fire right now. The game should not have come out at its current state, despite it being a good window of opportunity sales-wise where the brunt of 2025 game releases are saved up for the last half.
One does have to ask a few questions regarding this botched launch:
-Who asked for an open world action adventure title that isn’t Grand Theft Auto? This isn’t the aughts.
-Did the ex-Rockstar producer actually do anything during the development of the GTA titles way back then? A seasoned veteran of these kinds of big-scale games wouldn’t cock up this badly.
This isn’t the first time this has happened. But this won’t be the last.
