TI10: The International – Dota 2 Championship May Not Be Held In Sweden
Sad news for esports fans: the next major Dota 2 event may not be hosted in Sweden.Â
According to a recent blog post on the Dota 2 website, Valve’s appeal to classify The International – Dota 2 Championships as an elite sporting event has been denied by the Swedish Minister of the Interior. This is after talks with the Swedish Esports Federation and Visit Stockholm group (since this is also a tourism effort), and two weeks after the Swedish Sports Federation voted not to accept esports into its organization.
The post detailed Valve’s back-and-forth with the government, but as of now the company are looking for possible alternatives elsewhere in Europe to host The International this year.
“We remain committed to hosting The International this year in a way that is both safe for all involved, and properly celebrates the players and fans of Dota 2. We will be communicating what we find out as soon as we are able.”
Rest assured that the TI qualifiers will still be happening and will start on 23rd June. Still, this does bode the question of where the backup location for TI10 will be at.
