Long-Running Mobile Final Fantasy Game Shuts Its Doors After 8 Long Years

Disclaimer: This news is written by someone who worked on the first version of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
All good things come to an end, and it is sad to see this particular Square Enix game close its free-to-play doors.
Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a free-to-play 2D pixel art turn-based JRPG for mobile platforms (iOS, Android), will be shutting down on 31st October 2:59pm GMT+8 (30 October 23:59 PDT). Unlike recent free-to-play Final Fantasy mobile cashgrabs, FFBE lasted a good long 8 years, getting its start in 2016. The reason for the shutdown is most likely profit-related; the game isn’t making money like it used to.
“We regret to announce we have made the difficult decision to discontinue the FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS app service as of October 30, 2024 23:59 (PDT).
From the FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS Development Team, we apologize for the difficult decision, but are sincerely grateful for the support we’ve received from our players.
Since FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS’s launch on June 30, 2016, we’ve strived to provide an incredible and enjoyable gaming experience for our players every day that could exceed the day before. However, we’ve come to the conclusion that it would be difficult to continue maintaining the app experience, and to therefore end the app service.”
Developed by Alim, produced by Square Enix, and maintained by gumi, this online title had its own cool Final Fantasy-level storyline and featured simple-yet-fun turn-based gameplay. You tap on your six units, attack, and cast spells on your turn, with each animation being different and require some semblance of timing to get max damage. Plus, the soundtrack is pretty awesome!
This being a gacha game, the selling point is the plethora of characters you can recruit in this 2D pixel art style. And this game added a LOT of fan favourites like Cloud from FFVII, Ramza of Final Fantasy Tactics, and Vivi of Final Fantasy IX. It even added in a slew of Square Enix characters like Deus Ex’s Adam Jensen, Just Cause’s Rico Rodriguez, Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft, Parasite Eve’s Aya Brea, Shiloh of Legend of Mana, and even the characters and mechs from Xenogears! Fun fact: yours truly used to work at gumi (Singapore office) and was in a few meetings that involved the Deus Ex/Just Cause/Tomb Raider character additions months before the game’s launch in 2016!
The game also made pop stars Ariana Grande and Katy Perry canon in a Final Fantasy storyline, which was a choice. The game had a boatload of characters in its 8-year run, so you are pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to party selection.
We’ll miss you, FFBE. Thank you for the 2D pixel turn-based combat memories!
