Modders Are Recreating Morrowind With The Skyrim Engine

The strongest examples of “fine, I’ll do it myself” are often found in the video game industry, specifically in the modding community. The Elder Scrolls Renewal: Skywind is the latest and possibly the most ambitious mod to ever appear in the history of The Elder Scrolls. The goal? A total recreation of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind built using the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim engine.

The first official gameplay demo was recently shown at Gamescom 2019. Beginning in the city of Balmore, the demo takes us through one of the assassination quests from Morrowind: Writ for Sarayn Sadus.

From the get go, we get to see a glimpse of how amazingly detailed the landscapes of Morrowind have become thanks to the hard work of the core team and many, many volunteers working on Skywind. Buildings, monsters, and NPCs are all taken straight from Morrowind but now in HD and better textures.

It’s not just looks, even the voice acting and sound design are being built from the ground up. Getting the writ from Ethasi Rilvayn, we hear a clear and well-acted voice coming from her. Of course, they didn’t keep the gigantic text boxes from the original game and opted to maintain Skyrim‘s limited but still very fluid dialogue system.

Even Morrowind fans would agree that they wouldn’t simply want a 1-to-1 replication of the original game, just with better graphics. Morrowind‘s broken and wonky combat system and dependency on bunny hopping as the main method of travel are definitely getting fixed.

We’ll be getting Skyrim‘s combat system plus new weapons like spears and crossbows, and also a configurable fast travel system that will allow players to choose whether they’d want to save time or put their bunny hopping skills to use.

For now, there’s still no definite release date yet as the mod is still far from completion but if you’re interested in getting it, you have to first make sure that you have both Morrowind and Skyrim on your PC.

For more information, update, volunteer submissions, and more, check out Skywind‘s official website.

By the way, there’s also a project that’s doing the same thing but for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, check it out here.
