Let’s end this list with a remarkable RPG treasure from Enix, way before they were bought by Squaresoft and just focused on Dragon Quest nonsense. You play a valkyrie called Lenneth who is searching for souls of dead warriors and spellcasters to fight in the oncoming Ragnarok war.

This being an open-ended JRPG of sorts, you can either do your mission or figure out the underlying tale in this pretty bleak version of Midgard. The exploration is done in 2D platforming form, while the battles are part turn-based, part Street Fighter combo button input gameplay.

It’s pretty badass & innovative at the time when the JRPG crowd are getting a mite sick of Final Fantasy clones with too much padding.
